MATERIALS TO MAKE THE POINSETTIA FAIRY HOUSE
- Card stock - I prefer 110# card stock for the structure of the Fairy Houses, but 65# card stock works. It works well for the poinsettia flowers.
- Cardboard - For this example of the Fairy House, I used card stock rather than cardboard. 22 point cardboard is what I often use
- Watercolor paper is can be used for these flowers, but card stock was my choice for this project
- Gesso primer to prime your cardboard
- Distress Ink to edge the flower petals and give them more dimension
- Ink Blendgin Tool
- Glue options - Quick Dry Tacky Glue for the structure of the cardboard house or Bearly Art Glue for gluing card stock
- A way to cut out the pieces, I use my Cricut Maker to cut out all the pieces, but other cutting machines work, too
DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING THE POINSETTIA FAIRY HOUSE
- Download the free Poinsettia pattern from the Paper Glitter Glue library - Design No. 161

Circular Fairy House - Design No. 155
Hexagon Fairy House - Design No. 155

2. Choose your Basic Fairy House Structure
Here are the 3 shapes of Fairy Houses in this Whimsical Fairy House series. Choose the one you like, but I must say that the Poinsettia design works best with the Circular Fairy House.
Circular Fairy House - Design No. 155
Hexagon Fairy House - Design No. 155
Fairy Cottage - Design No. 156
Also there are 3 roof options available for the Circular Fairy House. For the Poinsettia house I recommend using the plain circular roof shown in middle on the left of the photo below.
3. Cut out the pattern for the house along with the flower pieces
I used 2 sheets of 8.5" x 11" card stock just for the flower petals on the roof. I also doubled the green leaf colored base so I could glue 2 layers together to make it stronger.
4. If using cardboard, prime and paint your house pieces
For this house I used card stock to make everything since it is much simpler.
5. Make the house structure
For the circular structure that means to curve the circular "tree trunk" base and glue it together. Then make the cone-shaped roof piece.
Here's the construction video for making this particular house.
6. Glue together the Flower base for the Poinsettia house
To make this base flower, I glued together 2 layers of green card stock and then layered the 2 red layers on top. These flower petals are not perfectly symmetrical because the real poinsettia flower isn't perfectly symmetrical. So don't go crazy trying to line them up perfectly.
7. Glue the house to the base before decorating
Apply a thick bead of glue to the bottom of the house and adhere to the flower base. While this is drying, you can work on the other pieces.
8. Make the Poinsettia windows
This is one of my favorite details on this fairy house. Layer the windows just like you did on the flower base. Glue the window frame piece on top.
9. For more dimension, ink the edges of the flower petals
Since this card stock is very flat, I think it helps to ink the edges of the petals to make them more distinct.
You can see the slightly darkened edges on the petals below.
10. Apply the green Poinsettia leaves to the base around the edge of your roof
Use the short green petals to glue around the edge of your roof piece. It helps to slightly curve them so they will adhere to the edges better.
11. Apply the paper Poinsettia petals to the roof of your Fairy House starting with the longest ones first
Staring with the longer petals, glue around the cone-shaped roof. Gradually add shorter layers on top, covering up the green cone roof
12. Glue the windows and door to the front Fairy House
Curve the windows and door to fit the curve of the circular house. Glue to the house.
