Butterflies on Fairy House with pink blossoms on the roof

This is just a brief tutorial to give you some options for decorating your Fairy Houses with Butterflies. Don't you think your fairy houses need butterflies fluttering about?

This is no. 11 in the 12 days of the Fairy House challenge. These butterflies are perfect for the Spring to Summer seasonal Fairy Houses.

Watch this video to learn how to make the Butterflies for your fairy houses on my Paper Glitter Glue YouTube channel! Be sure to subscribe to my channel so you know when I post another new paper craft project.

Materials to Make Butterflies for Your Fairy Houses

  • Card stock - For the black design on the butterflies, 65# card stock cuts best.
  • For the butterflies, I actually used watercolor paper and painted the butterflies. Don't ask me why. I just like to paint. Card stock would have worked equally as well.
  • Cardboard - you know that cardboard is my favorite material for making houses - 22 point cardboard works well. I used cardboard for the structure of this house.
  • Glue options - Quick Dry Tacky Glue for the structure of the cardboard house or Bearly Art Glue for gluing card stock together.
  • A way to cut out the pieces, I use my Cricut Maker but you can use other cutting machines to make this Fairy House

Steps to Make the Butterflies for Your Fairy Houses

  1. Download the free pattern from the Paper Glitter Glue library - Design No. 164
  2. Choose the basic house structure for your Fairy House:
Circular Fairy House - Design No. 155
Hexagon Fairy House - Design No. 155
Fairy Cottage - Design No. 156
All of these patterns are free in the library. I chose to use the Cricut Joy version of the Hexagon Fairy House for this project
  3. Assemble your house and glue to the base
  4. Glue flowers to the roof of your house if you want the butterflies to perch on flowers
  5. Cut out the butterflies that you like for the house. They do take awhile to cut out
  6. Glue the black wing design to your butterflies
  7. Assemble the butterfly wing windows if you want to use those windows
  8. Glue the door pieces together
  9. Attach your butterflies to the roof
  10. Glue windows to your Fairy House structure
  11. Decorate around the base of your house
  12. Glue the fence around your house
  13. Share your butterfly creation!

1. Download the Pattern - Butterflies for Your Fairy Houses - Design No. 164

This pattern for the butterflies for your Fairy House is free in the Paper Glitter Glue library. My files are available in 2 formats - SVG cut files for cutting machines like the Cricut Maker or Cricut Explore and PDF files you can print out.

Please note that the pattern files are in a zipped format. That is, they are compressed so they can be downloaded relatively easily. If you need help unzipping the files, these instructions below will help.

2. Choose the Fairy House Shape

For most of the patterns in this series, you have 3 choices of Fairy Houses structures that work with these patterns.

Here are the 3 shapes of Fairy Houses in this series. Choose one of the 3 an cut out the pieces.

The Circular Fairy House

The Hexagon-shaped Fairy House

This is the one that I chose for this fairy house.

And the Fairy Cottage

Any of these house shapes works with the butterflies.

3. Assemble your house and glue to the base

Construct the fairy house of your choice and glue it to the base that you like.

4. Apply flowers to the roof if you want butterflies perched on flower

I do have one recommendation here. If you are going to use flowers with your butterflies, it helps if the flowers are smaller and flat. That makes it easier to glue the butterflies in place.

5. Cut out the butterflies that you like for the house. They do take awhile to cut out

Choose which type of butterfly you like for your decor. The Swallowtail is the hardest to cut out. My Cricut Maker didn't cut all the way through for that particular butterfly. In addition, decide if you want to cover the entire roof with butterflies, or just add a few to your house.

And be prepared that it takes a while to cut out a large number of butterflies because of the detail in the cut file.

6. Glue the black wing design to your butterflies

Using glue with a fine tip, glue the black wing design to your butterflies.

7. Assemble the butterfly wing windows if you want to use those windows

Glue the window frames to the butterfly wing windows if you are going to use them. I actually think flower windows will look better for a butterfly house.

8. Glue door pieces together

Choose the doors you like for your butterfly fairy house and glue them together for a layered design

9. Attach your Butterflies to the roof

To glue the butterflies in place, fold the wings back from the body and apply glue to the underside of the body. Find a good place for the butterfly to land and apply to the roof

10. Glue the windows in place

Be sure to add decor elements to the house before you glue the fence in place.

11. Decorate around the base

If you want to place flowers around the base of your house, do that before you glue the fence in place.

12. Finally glue the fence around your fairy house

As the final step, glue the fence around your butterfly fairy house. I just think it's a fun detail for a fairy house.
