Here is The People's Choice Award - Erica's Spooky Dome Home. The design is based on a pattern I made for a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser.
Each year we sponsor a contest for Fall and Halloween houses - little houses that express the fun of the season - nothing gory or gross, just a little spooky, and often with a bit of humor. Congratulations to the winners. Enjoy.
Table of Contents
First Place - Judy's 13 Spooky Lane
First place - No. 16 Judy's 13 Spooky Lane - a true masterpiece. I just love her work so much.
Second Place - Donna's Black Widow Boarding House
Second place goes to No. 5 - Donna's Black Widow Boarding House
Third Place - LW's Swamp of Horror
Third place goes to No. 22 LW's Swamp of Horror - truly one of the scariest entries, especially if you aren't a fan of reptiles.
Whimsical Award - Lane's Baba Yaga House
The Whimsical award goes to No. 3. Lane's Baba Yaga House
Innovative Award - Marley's Lucious Crypt
And the innovative award goes to #46 - Marley's Lucious Crypt. All of the judges were impressed with this entry.
Kid's Award - Maxwell's Bat House Outhouse
And the kid's award goes to Maxwell for his entry no. 38 - Maxwell's Bat House Outhouse. This entry is certainly one of the funniest with toilet paper rolling out of the outhouse. Obviously, he has a great sense of humor.
Maxwell's house is so cool, but I also want to recognize the houses from Ariana (no.37) and Audrey (no. 33). They will get an award as well.
Special Awards - Just Because I want to recognize these great little houses
Funniest House
Oh my goodness. Doesn't the name, Dr. Frank N Stein's Plastic Surgery Clinic make you laugh? And when you see how Cheryl constructed the house in the shape of Frank's head you will laugh even more. I just love this one so much. Cheryl will receive a $20 Amazon gift card for her creative imagination on 18. Cheryl's Dr. Frank N Stein's Plastic Surgery Clinic.
Best Name
No. 10. Karen H's Broom Hilda's Inn - this one cracks me up because "Broom Hilda" is such a great play on the name Brunhilda, but also because "Broom Lane" leads you to the house. You can't help but smile when you see it.
Best Street Scene
No. 42 Joan's Beautiful Downtown Haunted Hills has the Fly by Night flight school over the broom room with the Poisoned Pen Bookstore on the corner. I mean, really, how did she come up with all that? Joan will get a $20 gift certificate.
Creative Concepts
I decided to award 4 additional special awards to the most creative concepts in making a house. Each of these winners will receive a $10 Amazon card.
No. 19 - Deb's Halloween House and Old Retirement Home - just love the execution and humor in this creation.
No. 25 - Joyce's Skeleton Dance Hall - another hysterically creative idea for a Halloween house
No. 40 Gina's Dracula's Party House - when I saw this entry I thought it looked like something from Animal House. So much fun in one entry
And under creative concepts, you can't leave out No. 6 Elizabeth's Enchanted Shadowtree. I LOVE, LOVE her tree. Her spooky tree haunts the village below. Such imagination.
Corniest Entries
I just had to reward these two entries because they are so beautifully done with one of my very first patterns. Becky made an entire street of Candy Corn Houses for No. 29 Becky's Candy Corn Lane. And Susan made a great version of the Candy Corn house - no. 44. They will both get a $10 Amazon Gift Card.
Entries for the 2023 Halloween House Contest (Contest rules below the entries.)
1. Elizabeth's Whispers-of-the-Past House
This fine house is filled with details too numerous to mention, from the super spooky cemetery on the side to the great tree on the right, and a condemned house filled with ghosts, enticing entry!
2. Diane's Macabre Manor
If the frightening skeletons first pull your focus, you are not alone! But this submission also does a great job with house lighting. The jack-o-lanterns are very well done, and the house is filled with lovely features. I'm partial to the siding and the shingles.
3. Lane's Baba Yaga House
If this year's contest sees a more colorful, spirited submission than this one, it will be a surprise! Putting a house on precisely this pedestal is a great idea, and I am not sure it could even balance without the black spider on top!
4. Karen W's Eyesnbones House
Surely a common phobia must be the idea of eyes following you: what to do if the eyes belong to a house?! This is an inspired use of this pattern. I particularly love the detached shutter, and the tree growing through the skull's eye socket! It is a special submission.
5. Donna C's Black Widow Boarding House
Some submissions are so feature rich, it can be daunting to try to pick out favorite features. Donna's Black Widow Boarding House has a magnificent base, matched in kind by the stone walkway to the entrance. I love the short wall around the left front, and the tree is super scary! I don't see any birds approaching that birdbath, do you? The web effects, the distressed look of the back wall, the witch superimposed on the moon ... just magical!
6. Elizabeth's Enchanted Shadowtree
Oh no! Elizabeth's Enchanted Shadowtree is about to consume the little village houses and everyone within them! I think I can safely say that is the scariest tree to yet appear in one of the Halloween House contests!
7. Peg's Altered Guard House
I do not know the name of the witch sitting in Peg's Guard House, but neither do I want to know! I love the darkness of the house, the webbing on the right and the brilliant color contrast of the pumpkin, flowers and berries on the left. But I still don't think I would seek admission!
8. Penny's Whooo Paid for this Renovation?
This is like the world's great Halloween social, come to life before our eyes! The owls may set the tone, but look at the ghosts and the jack-o-lanterns! So Halloweeny!
9. LW's Haunted Mansion and Cemetery
This is another fantastic Halloween scene! LW has given us a completely themed submission, with the coffin-shaped house at the back of the cemetery (look at those fine gates!), but the main mansion is scary in its rich, colored tones, and there is no end to delightful elements throughout. So nice!
10. Karen H's Broom Hilda's Inn
Broom Lane brings us to Broom Hilda's Inn, where the haunting begins! There are so many things to love about this house! Look at how BOO is spelled out using pumpkins! How cool is that! Look at the cute ghost at the base of the tree! Broom Hilda herself tops this delightful seasonal scene!
11. Donna C's Dead End Church
Who has ever adapted a matrimonial motif to Halloween themes?! Just buried? I can hear the tin clans clinking behind the hearse now! And the bride and undertaker joined forevermore? No U-Turns! What a lovely church it is, too! Who wouldn't want to be buried there?
12. Megan's Happy Little Haunted Home
What haunts a spooky Halloween spectacle more effectively than loose eyeballs? Those abound here, along with a party favor ghost beside the pumpkins. I really like the BOO across the door and the amazing broom leaning against the door. Lovely!
13. Ann W's Circle of the Raven's Nest
As is true for most holidays, Halloween is a social occasion. That may be seen with this submission thanks to the many witches, both inside and outside! When the sign says meeting tonight, it means it! Terrific submission. Don't dally beneath the bird.
14. KM's Galoween Glitter Pad
I am a big fan of using glitter to bring out the features of a house. The orange glitter on this house shows it off to advantage, as do the bats, as do the pumpkins! And what a lovely wrought iron fence surrounding.
15. Jackie's Sparrow Halloween House
Sometimes it can be hard to decide which features I like best on a submission. Is it the green striations on the front of the house? Is it the shape of the truly unique door, allowing the witch to escape? Is it the spooky trees on the side, with bats and owls above? This is a very nice and fun submission.
16. Judy's No. 13 Spooky Lane
No. 13 Spooky Lane has remarkable color depth within a darker range, amazing! The house is a remarkable structure, with interesting features on all sides. Just look at the smokestacks on the right, and the one on top! The skulls and skeletons make it even spookier! Well named!
17. LW's Church of Fear
The Church of Fear represents a complete scene, fear abounds! The church is a fine building, with a cemetery and a fence on which even ghosts could be impaled! I love the walkways and the cemetery plot.
18. Cheryl's Dr Frank N Stein's Plastic Surgery Clinic
One would be hard-pressed to find a more joyous exploration of Halloween spirit than Dr. Frank N Stein's Plastic Surgery Clinic! Whatever you do, don't let them administer anesthesia to put you under! Don't sign any release! U R Next!
19. Deb's Halloween House & Old Retirement Home
Deb's Retirement Home is filled with inauspicious guests. Among them: Bigfoot, Frankenstein, Moth Man, Dracula, Nessie and so many more! You can even see Nessie haunting the lagoon! Love the texture of the house itself! And it looks like a UFO has landed! Oh the horror!
20. Melanie's Sleeping in Peace
If you want a Halloween House rich in feature and detail, look no further than Melanie's Sleep in Terror! If that isn't the scariest tree I've ever seen! The house itself is super spooky, with the attached coffin, and the bats own the scene.
21. Katie's Colorful Halloween House
The Halloween seasonal colors of Katie's house are offset by the spooky trees, chock full of bats, tension-loaded for Halloween 2023.
22. LW's Swamp of Horror
The Swamp of Horror counsels against trespassing, but who would be tempted? Alligators, a huge snake, a terrifying spider, crows of Nevermore, and who is going to rescue the raccoon? Delightful house in the center, and the trees are terrific for this scary scene.
23. Joyce's Witch Training
Yes, witches are scary, but as you can see in this Witch Training, they can also be fun! What a beautiful coven of witches! And the house, even with the delightful crooked portion, only enhances the gathering! Halloween is here, indeed!
24. Marley's The Nightmare Nook
This Nightmare Nook almost looks like it was cast in bronze! Such exquisite detail everywhere you look. I love the books and the mantle and the portraits above it, the decorated columns on the side, this is a Halloween scene for the ages.
25. Joyce's Skeleton Dance Hall
This submission wins the category for skeleton attendance this year! And look at their variety, in such a cleverly designed little tower! Look at the little cat in the second story congress! Spooky scene all around!
26. Michelle's Hitchcock Haunted House
Including Hitchcock in a Halloween house is an inspired idea, as his creations and imagination are among the scariest there have ever been! I am just about positive that is Janet Leigh in the window silhouette in the upper right, doubtless preparing for the shower in which she meets her fate. So scary!
27. Joan's Witches' Kitchen
Aren't witches' houses the scariest?! With this creation, Joan has given us not only a beautiful Halloween house, but also magical landscaping and detail. The side-on view of the door is terrific, as well!
28. Lu's Central Bark Dog Park
What a cool idea! Making the Halloween house be a dog house, and such a frightful dog, too! The lampposts are amazing, and the bone motif perfect for spooky times!
29. Becky's Candy Corn Lane
Candy corn houses are perfect for a Halloween scene, specially so with pumpkins and ghosts! The landscaping ties it all together so well!
30. Marsha's Spooky Cottage
In the comment threads for this submission, everyone is most impressed with the magnificent roof and coloring in this house. Cats, bats, witches jack-o-lanterns ... it truly does have it all. And the Halloween colors are wonderful.
31. Erica's Spooky Little Dome Home
Placing this stunning house under glass was an inspired idea. The roof compliments the beautiful house so well, and the chimney smoke is some of the most realistic we have seen. A second photo shows this house in the dark, lit from within, and a magical glow shines around every shingle. Don't miss it.
32. Melanie's All Hallows Eve
I think it is the textures of this creation that impress me the most. It's like you can see the fibers of the windows, house and roof, all telling a spicy tale of Halloween spirit and promise.
33. Audrey's Spider Mansion
This Spider Mansion is the first children's entry of this year's collection, and if I wasn't told that, I would never know it. The house stands as a testament to the coming generations, and it gives up nothing to the submissions by the adults! You should be very proud, Audrey, your house is amazing.
34. Jodie's Winged Wraith's Spectral Sanctum
Sometimes it can be hard to decide what I like best about a house. This time, my favorite things are the colors on the face of the house itself, with the sun beside the imprinted skeleton. My favorite thing is the lovely fencing surrounding the property, but my favorite thing is the excellent tree in the courtyard, along with my favorite thing, the Beware sign. Oh wait ...
35. Joan's Creepy Cottage in the Woods
You know the house is a cold scene when a ghost is emerging from the chimney! I love this house in this setting, with the skeletons monitoring the comings and goings. Can you see the spooky face in the tree in the back? Terrifying!
36. Nora's The Pretty Witch's House
For me one of the coolest things about the Pretty Witch's House is the amazing roof! Wonderful glitter effects and texture. The witch is pretty indeed, and I love all the pumpkins and the delightful little ghost. Trick or treat!
37. Abriana's Spooky House
Here is another excellent children's entry, from Abriana this time. The use of color is fascinating, with a scary character in silhouette upstairs, and a porch roof tilting ominously. This is a marvelous house, Abriana!
38. Maxwell's Bat House Outhouse
If you have followed the contest submissions as we have gotten them posted, you know that we went a long time with no children's entries. It is a special joy to see them now. This clever construction is a Bat House Outhouse from Maxwell, and the toilet paper unspooling from within had me howling! Thank you for sharing your humor and your genius, Maxwell!
39. Alda's GOURDeous Fall
Unique in all our Halloween contest entries, Alda has brought us a gourd-motif into the seasonal celebration, with, as we learned from the submission, "gourd-shaped mezzanine windows and vines in the decors." So imaginative and creative.
40. Gina's Dracula's Party House
Gina's amazing house trends into a shelter-skelter approach to the holiday that really highlights the scary! I wouldn't want to be the pumpkin being squashed on the roof!
41. Nora's Green-with-Envy House
A house is clearly well named when you experience it in viewing the creation. Nora does as fine a job with glitter as it is possible to do. Once again we have a magnificent ghost, with an amazing roof on the house and creative pumpkins and cats filling out the scene.
42. Joan's Beautiful Downtown Haunted Hills
Combining multiple structures into a scene is a special way to create a Halloween view, as Joan has done with this Apothecary, Broom Room/Fly By Night and The Poisoned Pen Bookstore. Valet parking for witches arriving by broom, how imaginative is that?! I particularly love the streetlamps. And WHAT is that crawling out of the sewer! Frightening! Beautiful ensemble!
43. Edie's Nevermore Halloween House
What better way to emphasize a Nevermore Mansion than with Edgar Allen Poe in the front door?! Do take a moment to savor this incredible Halloween house, with its ravens and the bat and its many unique features. Beautiful work, creating this house, and the moon really sets it all off.
44. Susan's Candy Corn Halloween House
Those who 'study' Halloween houses know that Candy Corn houses are almost a category unto themselves, and Crystal's beautiful creation is one that shows why. Look at the incredible color saturation of the house. And at the beauty and the contrast of the stone walk leading to the house. Even the wonderful fence has candy corn attached to it!
45. Crystal's Creeptastic Cottage
Crystal's pretty little cottage focuses attention on the little ghost, the spider and the pumpkin. I really like the lighter colors and the silver accents, in the tree and in the pumpkin.
46. Marley's Lucious Crypt
If you ever want to show someone a cardboard house that looks like metal, Marley's Lucious Crypt House is your answer. Look at the authentic coloring of the house frame! This is a magical Halloween scene.
47. Ally's Asylum House from Kathleen
Here is a delightful (albeit scary) season creation. The lovely little house fits exquisitely in the oval setting, with so many goodies to savor and enjoy! Some houses you can look at for what seems like hours and not see it all. Lovely!

2. Name Your Design
First NAME YOUR DESIGN! This helps the judges (and contest visitors) remember each design. It also adds to the design.
It's much better for those viewing your creation if it has a name. Some of the names of the Christmas submissions in December were very creative. It can enhance your submission.
Please also write a sentence or two about your creative process, your inspiration and the like. Many people requested this change because they want to learn from you.
3. THREE WAYS TO ENTER THE 2023 MINIATURE HALLOWEEN HOUSE CONTESTPERMISSION TO POST PHOTO ON MY BLOG AND SOCIAL MEDIA
a) Post your house in the Paper Glitter Glue Facebook group with the tag #2023MiniHalloweenHouse. Please join this group so you enter here. It's the best way to enter.
b) Follow me on Instagram and post your 2023 Halloween house tag me @lucyf7b on Instagram.

4. PERMISSION TO POST YOUR PHOTO ON MY BLOG AND SOCIAL MEDIA
In submitting your creations, you are giving me permission to post a picture or pictures of your project on my website and social media just like I did for the Halloween house contest last year. I love to share your projects because they are all so incredible. This allows all site visitors and guests to see your creations.
5. SIZE LIMITATION FOR THE 2023 MINIATURE HALLOWEEN HOUSE CONTEST
Here are the size limitations:
Base - no limitation on the base so you can landscape as much as you want, but the size of the house does have limitations
House height - no taller than 10 inches tall
House width - no wider than 10 inches
House depth - no deeper than 8 inches
5. NO BLOODY OR GORY PARTS
But I don't want to see gory or bloody. That means no bloody body parts or scary deformed creatures. Creepy and spooky are good, but not gross or gory. I think bones and skulls are ok. By all means ask if you are unsure. I'm happy to update and clarify the rules if need be.
6. USE ANY PATTERN YOU LIKE
For your entries, you can use your own pattern, my patterns, Tim Holtz houses, or even a purchased pattern.
7. THE HOUSE MUST BE MADE OF CARDBOARD or CARD STOCK
Your house needs to be paper-based - made out of cardboard or card stock. No wooden houses. But you can use other materials for the base and embellishments.
8. CREATIVITY AND ORIGINALITY ARE EMPHASIZED
Creativity and originality are important and will be emphasized in judging. Hint: Let the fun shine through!
Also creativity in naming your house helps to make it more special. Please tell us a little bit about your house - how you made it, what inspired it, etc. We all love to read about the creative inspiration behind your projects.
9. YOU MAY ENTER UP TO 3 HOUSES, BUT THE HOUSES MUST BE UNIQUE AND CONSTRUCTED IN 2023
Up to three submissions, all of houses created in this calendar year.
10. HOW TO VOTE FOR THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD FOR THIS YEAR'S CONTEST
This year you (NOT the judges!) are going to choose the overall winner by voting for your favorite house. You have one vote when you post a comment at the end of this post AFTER ALL THE ENTRIES ARE IN ON OCTOBER 24TH. And you have another vote on my YouTube channel where we will post a video of all the entries on October 25th. Subscribe to get notifications of when we post the contest video.
GET THE KIDS INVOLVED MAKING A MINIATURE HALLOWEEN HOUSE!
We care a great deal that the Halloween season is a family season. We would love to see house submissions from your children. Please allow their creativity to flow. The names of the children's submissions will be placed in a hat and drawn randomly. Those submissions aren't - and should not be - competitive. They should have fun with no other concerns!
Note: Winners in children's submissions will be by random drawing. No creative pressure!
So that is the Halloween House Contest for this year. Whatever you do, enjoy it! Enjoy making your houses and sharing them. That's what it is all about.

Roberta Perez
Oh my goodness. They are all so good; much better than I can dream of doing. Let me say that each and every one of them deserve an award.
I had a very hard time choosing just one.
If I could vote more than once, I definitely would. That being said, I actually had to draw a number out of a hat. So the winner is: 43. EDIE'S NEVERMORE HALLOWEEN HOUSE.
susi

#43 EDIE'S NEVERMORE was my favorite. i really liked the E A Poe theme all the little details.
Bev Vitullo
I vote for number 17 the Church of Fear, I believe both buildings are well done. But the base , fence etc. all look home made. Sometimes the bases take as long as the buildings.
Lucy
Bev,
That is absolutely true - landscaping can take longer than the building. That's probably why my landscaping is so lame. Thank you for taking the time to vote.
Lucy
Gloria
loved all the entries but my favourite is Donna's dead end house. very creative. well done to all contestants.
Joanne
I vote for Judy's No. 13 Spooky Lane!
Nicola Hancock
#31. Is incredible. Love the detail of this spooky dome house!
John Meron
#6 ELIZABETH'S ENCHANTED SHADOWTREE is my absolute favorite. Elizabeth has captured the spookyness we love at Halloween. Elizabeth used the simplest form of the Putz houses and a hand crafted paper tree to created a spooktacular neighborhood street. It just oozes creepy dark shadows hiding who knows what. And just who lives in those houses?
Vicki Liszewski
First place #6, second #16, third #20.
Sue Christiansen
# 13 is my favorate
Becky Briggs
love 16. JUDY'S NO. 13 SPOOKY LANE so detailed and spooky

Marley's Lucious Crypt blew me away. What looked like aged metal was actually cardboard! Ha...what a great imagination this creator has. If I were a spook I'd pick this "house" to haunt! Boooooooo!

Elizabeth’s #1
Laura Miller
Well, I didn't finish mine again this year. 🙁 However, I am stunned by the incredible entries from all the people who did. Especially Judy C. who did a couple of my favorites. It was really hard to choose, but I decided on #31 Erica's spooky little house in a dome. I know, from chatting with her on the Facebook group, how much she enjoyed making it and all she put into doing it and I think it came out wonderful. I did want to do a quick shout out to the creator of Candy Corn lane, though. What an adorable scene. You could do Candy Cane lane for the Christmas contest.
Barbara Hansen
Love #31 Fantastic Composition!!!
Holly A McFadden
42. Joan's beautiful Hunted downtown! is my vote!

#25 by Joyce tells a story about how skeleton's spend their days.

Loved Erica’s #31 Spooky house in a dome. It’s amazing!!
Emily Denyer
I love #31 the spooky dome home. It Stood out from the rest….great attention to detail!
Marlane Gutzwiller
My favorite is #44 Susan's Candy Corn Halloween House. It's colorful and Halloween-ish at the same time. I love the simple lines, the candy corn shaped window and door, the walkway, and the 'smoke' coming out of the chimney. I know other entries probably took more time to craft and involved complicated techniques, but sometimes that's not the most important thing in a contest. Looking at this one makes me feel happy and in the Halloween spirit at the same time so it's a winner.
Marsha Urso

My favorite is #43, Edie's Nevermore Halloween House. I love all the little details that went into the house -- the little fence on the roof, the shingles, and the roof over hang on the left tall side of the house. The front porch really gives the house 3D depth. I love the ravens guarding the front gate. Well done!
Teresa U

My most favorite Halloween House is number
#9 LW'S Haunted Mansion And Cemetary
The detail that was put into this project was truly amazing, it is so lifelike, they took the time and planned it properly and executed a truly haunted place. It's an old rickety, creepy, spooky place that I would love to visit if it was real. Good luck
Angelica Castillo Mejia
House #16 was the one that did it for me. Has lots of details, and a lot of small pieces that we know are not easy to handle/fold/glue.
You can see that whoever built it put effort into doing it.
Linda Kammerer
What a great selection - so many outstanding choices! I am voting for # 5, Good luck to all!
Lucy
Linda, thank you for looking at the little houses and for voting. Everyone deserves an award for their creative endeavors. Because we can only show one photo, it's hard to see all the incredible details everyone adds to their projects. Donna's house is one of those that is loaded with personality.
Lucy
Karen
My favorite is #43 EDIE'S NEVERMORE HALLOWEEN HOUSE. I just love the literary theme of this amazing house. Edgar Allen Poe with the raven on his shoulder in the doorway just makes this perfect for use in the classroom studying this famous poem.
Lucy
I love that one too. Here's the story she wrote about the inspiration for the house:
Here is the story: As a struggling writer, Edgar Allan Poe lived in poverty and sickness during his short lifetime. He also suffered a terrible tragedy when his (very!) young wife, Virginia, died from tuberculosis with only Edgar's great coat to warm her. Some believe Virginia's death led Poe to compose, The Raven . It didn't help matters that as an alcoholic, Poe was known to squander handouts from friends and family that responded to his pleas for help to feed his family.
Poor Edgar! I just couldn't leave him like that, Lucy. So, as Edgar and Virginia entered the afterlife, they decided to find more comfortable--but quiet--surroundings in which they could "retire". They chose an older, abandoned house that enjoyed a reputation for being haunted, and was therefore, avoided by the living. But the best part Edgar and Lucy agree, is that the name of the house is "Nevermore"! Edgar likes to joke that they now reside in "Never-poor, Nevermore".
Edgar and Virginia are still there, and some people say you can see their ghosts during the full moon in October.

I love this contest, I look forward to it every year (also the Christmas one:). Every year the houses are incredible and choosing just one to vote for is even more difficult than last year. I have to choose - and my choice is No1 Whispers-of-the-Past. The windows with 'whispers' (ghosts) are so spooky! If there is a runner-up, in my mind it has to be No31'Erica's Spooky Little Dome Home', it's beautifully done.
Lucy
Elizabeth's Whispers of the Past was the first entry that came in and I was so impressed with it. She is always creative and imaginative.
And I am so glad you look forward to these contests. They are a lot of work, but I think (HOPE) that it inspires people and brings them a bit of creative fun.
